Mr. Pham van Au, age 39, and his wife Huynh Thi Dieu, age 37, have 2 sons, age 17 and 4. He has no land of his own, just the foundation of the house they are currently living in. He and his wife work for hire, doing trifling things like cutting and carrying sugar canes, making 4USD a day but it is unstable and usually their work lasts about 2 months. Off season, they move to Dac Nong, Dac Lac to pick coffee beans for about a month a year. His elder son quit school at age 15 to lay fish pot or cast net to catch fish to help with the family expenses. He works far away and won’t come home until 5 or 6 days. On season he makes around 10USD each trip. Mr. Au’s house is in bad conditions with rotten pillars and rafts. The roof is badly torn and he cannot afford to have it fixed. During rainy season, he has to use plastic to cover the leaky places in the house.
